Joelle was born and raised in Chatham. Influenced by her mother, Jo-Ann (Saville) Batten, who was a skater and instructor herself, she began her skating early. In 1978, at the age of 8, she won her first medal (silver) at Windsor Skate. Joelle went on to compete and win at the sectional, divisional, and national levels and represented Canada at international competitions.

Western Ontario Championship – Silver Medal
Central Divisional Championship – Gold Medal
Canadian Championship (Jan.’86) – Gold Medal
Received G. E. Hudson Award from Chatham Figure Skating Club for competitive accomplishments and contribution to the club – selected as role model for the Canadian Institute for the Prevention of Addiction.
1986 – 1987 Junior Ladies
Western Ontario Championship – Gold Medal
Central Divisional Championship – Gold Medal
Canadian Championship (Jan. ’87) – Bronze Medal
Member of Canadian National Junior Figure Skating Team and competed in the Merano Spring Trophy Junior Ladies Figure Skating Competition in Italy winning a Bronze Medal

Central Divisional Championship – Gold Medal
Canadian Championship (Jan. ’88) – 9th place

Joelle presently lives in Chatham and is a professional instructor with the Chatham Skating Club.
