About

Randy was born in the Fletcher/Merlin area. He attended Merlin District High School where he excelled at track and field, basketball, and volleyball, winning three SWOSSAA volleyball championships and two OFSAA championships while playing for coach Mort Giles, an Honoured Member of the Chatham Sports Hall of Fame. He continued his volleyball success at the University of Western Ontario where he led his team to two CIAU championship tournaments and was team captain and most valuable player in his last year. His teaching career took him to Queen Mary Public School, Winston Churchill Public School and Chatham Kent Secondary School where he successfully coached boys’ and girls’ teams.

Career Highlights
  • 1984 – founded the Chatham Elementary Schools volleyball league
  • Beginning 1986 v founder and for over 30 years has been director of Volleyball Kent Camp
  • 1989 – 2010 – was senior and junior volleyball coach at CKSS winning 7 OFSAA Gold Medals (5 as head coach, 1 as assistant coach, and 1 as co-coach), 3 silver medals, and 1 bronze – his teams also won 3 SWOSSAA junior girls championships and 1 SWOSSAA junior boys championship
  • 1998 – founded Chatham Ballhawk Volleyball Youth Program
  • 1998 – 2011 – club coach in the Ballhawk program – 2007 – won gold medal in Ontario Volleyball Association Championships 16U girls and silver medal at Eastern Canadian Championships
  • 2010 – 2016 – Volleyball Instructor – Physical Education AQ at the University of Windsor
  • Beginning in 2014 – has been Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach at Western University who were Bronze Medalists at 2014 – 2015 and 2015 – 2016 OUA Championships
  • Beginning in 2010 – certification facilitator for Ontario Volleyball Association Developmental and Advanced Developmental coaching clinics

  • Randy has served in various capacities in other local and provincial organizations including Chatham Y Pool Sharks, Cataraqui Scout Camp Volunteer Committee, South Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association Board (SWOSSAA), Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA), Ontario Recreational Canoe and Kayak Association, and President of Chatham Ballhawk Volleyball Club.

  • 1990 – Manning Morgan Memorial Award for Recognition of Service and Promotion of Kent County Elementary Schools Athletic Association
  • 1994 – Hillerich & Bradsby Award for Outstanding Contribution to Sport
  • 2005 – OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award – Girls “AAA” Volleyball – it is given to a teacher/coach who has made a significant contribution to the educational athletic program
  • 2005 – Ontario Volleyball Association – Recognition Award – it is presented to an individual who has been involved in the development of volleyball at the club or provincial level for 5 years or more
  • 2010 – OFSSA Pete Beach Award which is the highest honour given by OFSAA – it is given to one teacher or administrator in each regional association who has used school sports to positively influence students
  • 2010 – CKSS Staff Alumni Award for Outstanding Contribution to Athletics – it is awarded to a retiring staff member for “exceptional service, effort, and leadership in sharing the successes of CKSS athletes and athletics” during his/her career at CKSS
  • 2015 – Ontario Volleyball Association Achievement Award – it is presented to an individual who has an impact on volleyball development at the regional or provincial level for 10 years or more
